In this forest school activity we will become bird architects. We will construct a nest with the goal of creating a safe place for a bird to lay their eggs. If we’re lucky, a bird may even adopt this nest or reconstruct it! In order to make a home fit for a bird, we have to think like a bird.
Birds use natural resources to build their nests.
The base of the nest may be constructed with:
- Twigs and sticks
- Grass and leaves
- Feathers and fur
Some birds will use these materials as “glue” to adhere the materials together:
- Mud
- Spider silk
- Moss and lichen
Some birds even decorate their nests! They may do this to attract a mate, to camouflage their nests, or to simply make their nest feel cozy. A bird may decorate their nest with:
- Bright colored berries
- Flowers
- Shells
- Found pieces of plastic or glass
When constructing your nest, imagine the bird that may live in it. How big is the bird? What is the weather like in this environment? What predators are near? How long do the babies of this species of bird live in the nest? Consider the answers when designing the nest so that you can offer the most amount of protection to the eggs. Remember, not all nests are the same. Different birds build different homes. Learn more about types of bird nests here.
Now build your nest and check it often, you never know when a bird may come and adopt it!
